Due to the rapid pace of tech development and the volume of personal data that is stored on smart tech, residents tend to store their unwanted tech in drawers, cupboards and lofts, as they do not know how to dispose of it appropriately and fear losing their personal data, whilst some may throw old tech away as waste.

During the previous five Tech-Takeback events held in Brighton, Brighton & Hove residents donated nearly 9 tonnes of tech helping to reduce the amount of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) going to landfill,  increased the amount of WEEE being recycled correctly and enabling valuable resources to be recovered.

City of London residents and workers within the Square Mile are therefore urged to donate their unwanted tech to Tech-Takeback whilst it is at St Michael Paternoster Royal.

Tech-Takeback recognises that technology has transformed our lives, and in return, it wants to transform the environment by preventing unwanted tech from becoming waste and by giving it a second life and enabling charities and good causes to redistribute it.  This enables residents to declutter and dispose of tech securely and safely, and at the same time, support those less able to purchase new tech.

Examples of tech to bring to TTB6 (in working condition or broken), include PCs, tablets, laptops, hard drives, memory cards, USBs and USB connected devices, CDs and DVDs, mobile phones, smart phones, games consoles, printers, digital cameras, sat navs and cables.  It is easy to forget to donate the cables but Tech-Takeback is happy to take all cables (even unaccompanied cables that might have lost their original device and are really annoying orphaned in drawers!).

Tech-Takeback enables data-bearing tech items to be erased of data using a government compliant data-wiping service which is provided free for City of London residents and workers within the Square Mile.  If the item is at the end of its life, the resources and materials used in creating the tech will be reused and the data-bearing item securely destroyed.

Various charities have benefited from receiving tech for reuse, repair and upcycling including the Sussex Homeless Support Charity, the Green Centre, The National Tech4Good Awards, The Bevy Community Pub, Artists at Boomtown Festival, Brighton Pride HQ, Screwed Sculptures, the Library of Things and the "Little Trees" Skills Training Centre in The Gambia.
